BLOOD MOON RISING
Blood Moon Rising really supports up and coming writers and artists and Editor AL J. Vermette is one heck of a nice guy. AL is continually trying to make a better magazine, as well as publishing others (The Horror Writer, Werewolf Magazine) and is truly a guy who loves all things horror. In addition to various short stories, articles and interviews, I recently began a series of DVD movie reviews entitled Digital Shrieks. Each chapter takes on a horror sub-genre and spotlights some of the more bizarre offerings.

Cult Movies
I submitted some reviews to Cult Movies because I really liked the magazine. My submission got scattered in their office and my cover letter was lost. I did not have my name on each page of the submitted reviews (I know better) so the couple reviews they chose to run in #37 were without a name.

Time Walker (1982) [movie review], “Cinema Under the Stars: America’s Love Affair with the Drive-in Movie” [book review]

“Remembering Drive-in Theaters” [short article]
Femme Fatales
Femme Fatales was my first taste of published success. I learned a lot my first time out, such as, there is no way you can earn a living as a writer when your phone bills are more than twice the check you receive for the gig! Admittedly, I had a great time talking to guys like Fred Olen Ray and Jim Wynorski, and actresses Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer, while compiling my portion of the final article. I got the gig after meeting Brinke Stevens, who put me in touch with the magazine’s editor, at the 1993 Zombie Jamboree convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Produced But Abandoned” [article about partially completed films- a subject filmmakers just love talking about- the films they didn’t complete!]
Hellnotes [weekly print/electronic newsletter]
My Hellnotes experience is a unique and strange one. In early ’98 I contacted a number of horror writers that I held in high esteem and asked if I could shoot them some questions regarding the [then] current state of horror fiction. Some contributed more than others, but all were generous with their time and comments. I sent the piece to Dave Silva, the editor of Hellnotes. Not only did his response include an acceptance letter, it also included a check and a copy of the newsletter in which it had already appeared(!). This had never happened before and will probably never happen again. A great experience.

The Horror Writer
Written for horror writers by horror writers, the magazine gives me the opportunity to share my writing experiences with other writers. I also sometimes get to interview someone cool for the magazine. From editor AL Vermette.

The Phantom of the Movies’ Videoscope Magazine
I read Videoscope regularly until I finally got the compulsion to send in a movie review to see if it could be used. To my complete delight the review was accepted and I was given my own column, “Drive-in Dementia!” (The coolest thing about the acceptance was that it showed up on my 28th birthday, what a present!) Somewhere in the time I’ve worked for VS, I went from Robert Freese to Rob Freese. (I’ve also been known to go by the name Roberto Freezini when reviewing Italian giallo thrillers.) Not only have I contributed movie reviews, I’ve also contributed book reviews, film series overviews, and have been lucky enough to interview a number of filmmakers whose work I admire.
